Sketch(es) of the Day: Cambiasi Exercises

Today was another one of those experimental art adventures. This time I cracked open my Moleskine and made some messes. I discovered the sketches of Renaissance painter Luca Cambiasi. They intrigue me; I was trained in a modern drawing style which emphasises gesture and mark-making. My natural inclination is to realism, and here I find the two in harmony, which is something I continually strive for: expression and precision of each mark I make. And these are meant to help the artist solve visual problems. I'm hoping to use this technique to improve reference material.

I tried using the kuretake waterbrush I have inked up with a grey wash but it was very dry on the Moleskine paper, so I switched to the Aquash waterbrush. I stroked the tip of a charcoal grey Derwent inktense pencil to produce the ink tones. Also, the Noodler's black ink reacted with the water since I did not give it time to set in. This wasn't a great way to be accurate but I still got plenty of visual information down.

Sketch of the Day: Dilly Daisy

Yesterday, it was my turn to run the shop at the Back Room Gallery. Whenever I had a moment or two to myself, I worked on this little sketch of my view from the cashier a display of clothes by Dilly Daisy. The colours actually look brighter and fresher than this in my sketchbook (and, of course, in reality!). I rather like the effect of mixing Caran D'Ache with Winsor and Newton artists' watercolours. The Caran D'Ache crayons, used as paint pans, can be stunning in their intensity and the chroma is amazingly high. When I have the pennies to, I'll be getting more crayons. They're fantastic!

Sketch(es) of the Day: Play Days

The soft cores of professional coloured pencils are infamous for breaking off while you're sharpening. I bought a black raspberry pencil, and managed to snap off three points before setting it to paper. Solution: use a clutch pencil to hold the broken tips. New problem: the tips are uneven. So, rather than a nice even point, I drew these with a chunk of broken coloured pencil lead. The subjects vary. There's life-drawing, and studies of Jane Morris, model for the Pre-Raphaelite painter, Dante Gabriel Rossetti (from photographs).

She's in this one as well. I drew it with a bamboo barbecue skewer dipped in india ink. I can't wait to give it another try on a large piece of paper! It brought back memories of studying drawing with Dr.Law at the University of Windsor. I wasn't technically in the art program, and couldn't get back in once I had left the BFA program to focus on literature (there is no portfolio to get into the school of visual art. It's more or less first-come-first-served, with preference for new students out of high school; no room for veteran grads limping along in their mid twenties!).

Honestly, I really need a larger sketchbook...

Sketch(es) of the Day: Ron Silliman's alphabet

As a graduate student, I assisted with an event held at the University of Windsor, in honour of Ron Silliman's poetic work: the alphabet. The conference was called, fittingly, the alphabet Symposium. I herded wayward scholars, scampered across campus to sort out last-minute tech issues, comforted the anxious, and handed out spiffy name tags as well as the programme which I had lovingly written and typeset (no one commented on its flawless appearance but I knew that they knew). Aside from these moments of excitement, I spent a lot of time sitting alone at the sign-in table. I had spoken with Dr. Louis Cabri, my supervisor, about my new habit of sketching public scenes. He encouraged me to record the event, and so I gave it a shot.

Why don't I have a sketch of Ron Silliman? I really don't know; it might have something to do with the arrangement of the room. I was quite excited to practice my rusty life-drawing skills on the scholars but I soon came to realise that everyone has the same when they're at the podium. That, and they look like they're eating or taking a microphone to the eye (sorry about that).

On a technical note, I was still getting used to using a waterbrush (a paintbrush with a water reservoir in the handle). It was still hard to control the water flow. I was also getting used to the Caran d'Ache neocolor ii crayons that I've since come to enjoy to much. But in these early days, both of these now-beloved tools were a real pain.

Sketch of the Day: Classic Light

Good models are so hard to find. I sometimes end up using the same reference for different studies. I simply don't have the resources to take my own reference pictures. The light in this reference was too lovely to pass up. I am really enjoying how the two types of coloured pencils complement each other: the soft core Prismacolor, and Verithins. A friend of mine commented that I was 'painting with pencils.' I think there's a lot to be said for that analogy. I think of the soft cores almost in the same way that I do the larger brushes I use for portraits to mass in shapes before moving to the smaller brushes to refine details.I'm not sure if I like working with the Moleskine paper. It has a cream colour, and an almost manila file folder quality to it.

36th Annual SketchCrawl

April 21st was the 35th Annual International SketchCrawl. SketchCrawl is often described as a 'drawing marathon,' but it's really a good excuse to get out and make some art in the open air. Usually, small groups get together with their sketchbooks and easels, but going solo is just as good. Windsor first participated in the world-wide event in 2010 through the efforts of the Windsor-Essex County Plein-Air Society.

The date has just been announced for the 36th Annual International SketchCrawl: Saturday, July 14th, 2012! If you'd like to participate with a group, or have your sketches featured on Windsoriana post a comment below or visit the Sketchcrawl forum.

Sketch of the Day: Prospero

A study after the painting 'Prospero' (Bertram Forsyth as Prospero) by Sir E. Wyly Grier, oil on canvas 1924. Sketch done at Art Gallery of Windsor. The painting is part of the permanent collection of the AGW, and often on display in the Canadian gallery. A very interesting painting in loose, dramatic handling, and lit from the back. I would post a photo of the painting for the sake of comparison but googling the artist and the subject both bring back this sketch and my other drawings instead!

By far the best thing about sketching at the gallery, aside from how relaxing it is, is how you can strike up conversations with other visitors. A family from Montreal took an interest in me and we chatted for quite some time about my work and the painting. My only regret is that I didn't bring a cushion with me to sit on while I worked!

Looks a bit Jack Sparrow, no?

The third annual Culture Days weekend will take place September 28, 29 and 30, 2012, and will feature thousands of free, hands-on, interactive activities that invite the public to participate “behind-the-scenes,” to discover the world of artists, creators, historians, architects, curators, designers and other creative people in their communities.

Gallery Tour and Exposition of Mike Marcon's FRAGMENTS

Gallery Tour and Exposition of Mike Marcon's FRAGMENTS; A CIVILIZATION ONCE LOST”, Saturday September 29, 2012, 12:00 - 5:00 PM

Mike Marcon presents mixed-media installations involving themes related to Canadian identity to coincide with the ongoing War of 1812 bicentennial celebrations. Marcon’s work explores the notion of the wilderness as a privileged space, a “kind of masculine homeland within the greater framework of the nation state”. Found objects, images and sculpture act as a catalyst for the displacement of symbols and myths that continue to inform our “official” national identity. The juxtaposition of objects and images create a labyrinthine experience and stimulates critical reflection while situating these myths within the viewers’ personal narratives.

Sketch of the Day: Thomsonesque Alley

Here's the opposite end of the alley from yesterday's Sketch of the Day. This scene reminds me so much of the scenes painted by the Group of Seven, Tom Thomson in particular. I remember seeing one of his paintings at the Art Gallery of Windsor when I was very young. I crossed one of the galleries to see it, even though it was one of their smallest canvases. These plein air paintings are some of the most famous works in Canadian art history. I find their use of negative space so lyrical. The one below has some wonderful mid tones.
This sketch also marks the end of a special sketchbook I have been using for nearly three years. How far I've come in that time!

Sketch of the Day: Alley

When I told one of my closest and dearest friends that I planned to sketch scenes of Windsor, she was very skeptical. I assured her there there's plenty of beauty here, if you're looking for it. One of my favourite places to find it? Alleys. Most Windsor neighbourhoods have alleys running behind homes. They're not the same as the Medieval alleys that sometimes doubled as market places, but they're often home to surprising landscapes. In Walkerville, every alley has at least one lilac tree. Go on and check if you don't believe me! Usually they bloom in May. I took a photograph of this alley while taking my walk. Turning around, I took another where I could see the makings of a Tom Thompson knock-off. I just might paint that one one day. This particular sketch was done on request for another friend. So, here it is, friend: your sketch of buildings.

Book Launch: In Pursuit of the Golden Key

Windsor's creative community sure knows how to celebrate! This year is the bicentenary of the War of 1812, a conflict which formed the character of our region for years to come. Artists Dennis White and Steve Gibbs have put together a merry chase: a treasure hunt, a book, and a golden key at the centre of it all. What is the treasure, you might ask? The official website puts it simply:

The riddles, poetry, quotes and artwork all contain information that when put together will lead you to solving the puzzle and to a document entitling you to the grand prize — the treasure. The first person to correctly solve the puzzle will receive the Golden Key that will open a treasure worth over $10,000 CND.

Why not come out to the Art Gallery of Windsor for the official book launch May 5th at 11 am?
Yes two hundred years have come and gone
Since war once ruled this land
A little knowledge you will need to solve the task at hand
A riddle or two will lead to a clue of lives from days gone by
But be aware
With whom you share
For in them the answers lie
Leotie's treasure is yours to find
It is not as hard as you think
For within these pages
Through different stages
You are bound to find a link
So your journey begins with clue number one
Good luck! As you begin today
Is it a clue for you to shout, "I've won!"
Or one that will lead you astray?
